Democracy is overtolerant of diversity. It is too broad-minded to take into account its causes. It is too highbrowed to be bothered by details. It is too practical and socially-oriented to delve into individual minds. It is too forward-thinking to worry about the possible relation of an archaic practice to ancient beliefs. It is too idealistic to be concerned with bodily matters. It overvalues intellectuality and fails to notice the obvious relation of paedocircumcision to piousness. And it is too ethical to admit the obvious relation of religious fundamentalism to religious extremism.
