Not only in perception have the theories of relativity and quantum mechanics falsified reality. Not once have physicists have overlooked distorted, destroyed or hidden from view inconvenient experimental results and interpretations. Quantum physics and relativity theories, for instance, are based on systematic ignorance, misinterpretation and covering of the experimental data for existence of the luminiferous aether.
The purely intellectual aethers of relativities
Nineteen’s century physicists believed that the luminiferous aether[i] is an immobile and rigid crystal-like all-pervasive filling of space. Based on this they expected that the velocity of the aether wind relative to earth should equal the velocity of earth through space. The famous experiment of Michelson and Morley[ii] performed in 1887 actually detected an aether wind but its velocity was about ten times smaller than expected. The original and reasonable conclusion of the experimenters was that the luminiferous aether is partially dragged by earth. These results, however, were confusing for physicists. Instead of elaborating a new theory of the luminiferous aether that interprets its interaction with matter they eventually preferred to ignore the observed facts.
At that point Einstein’s theory of special relativity played a crucial role in theoretical physics. It saved the old immobile aether by theoretically disallowing its interaction with matter. Einstein announced the inconvenient results of Michelson-Morley experiment for worthless. The theory of special relativity interpreted reality by disregarding them. It theoretically reduced activities of aether to a totally abstract physical constant – the constancy of speed of light in vacuum.
What the theory of special relativity essentially did was simply render aether totally abstract and undetectable. It outlawed properties of space filling only to attribute them to matter. Despite that some may represent the special relativity otherwise basically it is a theory of the immobile and undetectable aether. Actually special relativity created a new type of totally abstract and undetectable aether by ignoring facts of matter-aether interaction. The theory left other branches of physics deal with the matter-space interactions and Einstein spoke of “aether of mechanics” and “aether of electrodynamics”.
Special relativity oversimplifies and falsifies reality. It dematerialized aether in order to save it: a manipulation that can take place only in the abstract mental realm. It is no wonder that the theory of special relativity has many paradoxical corollaries such as time travel. It performed a purely intellectual magical trick and the hungry for wonders public was captivated. Even Michelson and Morley later reconsidered their own deductions under the pressure of the newly-established relativistic paradigm.
The aether or space of special relativity is absolute in the sense that it cannot be acted upon. Special relativity created a bizarre asymmetry of matter-space interaction: aether affects matter, for instance by limiting velocity of photons to c, but matter does not affect it. The asymmetry of matter and space is an artificial division of reality that can exist only in theory.
The Newtonian formula describes the universal attraction as a function of space hence as a part of aether-matter interaction. The theory of general relativity attempted to explain gravity. But it had to do this in the conditions of propertyless space of special relativity. No wonder it arrived only at a geometrical description of gravity’s action. General relativity had to invent a new property of space that was affected by matter. For that purpose it introduced the space-time continuum which was a new type of gravitational aether.[iii] The space-time is presented as a fourth dimension. It is a synthetic and entirely abstract category. The new aether of general relativity is immaterial. It helps visualize the action of gravity but impedes understanding its physical nature.
And the aether drift was drifted away
Meanwhile other inconvenient to special relativity experiments were concealed. Dayton Miller,[iv] for instance, later performed much more precise and extensive experiments with improved interferometers. They not only proved existence of aether wind but showed its direction and dependence on altitude. The papers of his extensive and painstaking research that he handled to his assistant, however, disappeared for many decades after the latter became a student of Einstein. Falsification of reality that special relativity undertook was institutionalized.
Abstract dogmas are indisputable and abstract science is as uncriticizable as any religion. The abstract quantum-relativistic physics eliminated its concrete rival one by one with ease. Just like religions have many times done with infidels.
The oil drop experiment performed by Robert Millikan[v] and Harvey Fletcher in 1909 was designed to prove existence of electron and quantized state of energy. It aimed to experimentally validate the quantum concept. The experiment attempted to deduce elementary charge of electron by measuring difference between electric charges of oil drops. However, there are millions of electrons in an oil drop and drops differ in size so the experimental set clearly lacked the sensitivity needed to detect single charges. Evidently, the experiment was too imprecise to have meaningful results. Despite this the fundamental value or elementary charge it deduced was accepted without recheck.
Funnily, until today the oil drop experiment is the only physical confirmation of the quantum concept. And even more funnily, it was recently found that Millikan selectively filtered the results of his experiment and published only those that seemed to confirm the presumed fundamental value of the electric charge.[vi] Neither the unreliability of the experiment nor the falsification of its results has shaken the belief of quantum physicists in their discipline. So firm is their trust. So religious-like is their science.
Strangely, the forgery of the only physical validation of quantum mechanics did not provoke scientists to consider repeating the experiment. The physicists’ disinterestedness in this issue may seem incomprehensible to outsiders. But let us try to understand them. Contemporary physicists know pretty well that the oil drop experiment is too imprecise for its results to be taken seriously. Physicists look on the experiment as a curiously outdated attempt in the right direction.
Nowadays physics has outgrown its infantile empirical stage and experimentation has lost its scientific value. It has thrown off the yoke of reality and converted into a spiritual discipline. It has become a religion. The particle theology has accelerated science beyond reason and towards the irrational. But it is accessible to all. You can call its apostles here.
Contemporary physicists know with certainty that it is all a fundamental uncertainty. Interpretation makes their science, not experiments. In the end, the fundamental value of the electric charge has been confirmed indirectly by other speculative means. Just like Millikan has confirmed it. If scientists seem disinterested in truth it is only because they are detached in order to be impartial. Just like priests who are closer to God are often detached from mundane affairs.
And last but not least practical proof that scientists are on the right track is the support of the public that funds their fantastic science.
