We are never alone. Each of us is an ecosystem of its own. Normally, each of us is colonized by a vast number of microbes that outnumber about ten times the cells in our bodies. The human microbiome[i] provides for many metabolic and defensive functions. And we are what our microbiome smells of.
That an organ smells is not in the least a sufficient reason for its amputation. The inner part of the prepuce and glans penis are covered with a mucous membrane.[ii] It secretes mucous[iii] that serves chiefly for mechanical and biochemical protection. The penile mucosa contains leucocytes[iv] and antiseptic enzymes such as lysozyme[v] which protect against infection. For that reason the glans penis is always wet. And this is so with all animal species.
Mucous membranes are far from being sterile. Normally they are wet and swarm with beneficial microbes. Their skin flora[vi] sustains their natural and healthy state and provides for their normal functioning. From a microbiological and medical point of view a germ-free state of the genital mucous membranes as well as of any other epidermal tissue is unhealthy and ineffective
But wet mucous membranes smell. Should we keep them dry if we want them odourless? No, because this will damage their mechanical and immunological functions. To maintain that glans must be dry is to ridicule the prudence of nature. Can anyone consider the option to dry his mouth in order to reduce the smell of his breath? Notwithstanding, the smell of the penile mucosa is one of the most frequently cited arguments for circumcision.
Body smells are valuable indicators for state of health. The lack of smell does not guarantee health. Although it may imply good health, most often it indicates suppressed natural smell. So the reduction of preputial smell is not a medical argument for circumcision at all but an aesthetic one. On the contrary, it is an anti-hygienic advice. The dry glans callouses with time, becomes covered with microscopic cracks, and begins to peel. The condition of its skin and its flora is abnormal and unhealthy but the reduced smell and sensitivity conceal this.
The odour of mucous membranes increases with inflammation, illness and/or intoxication. A strong smell betrays either some dysfunction, or poor sanitation, or both of them. A slight odour of the prepuce indicates a clean and healthy state of the body. The smell of the genital mucosa is very informative about both the hygiene and health. Likewise the smell of penile mucosa of cleanly men is very informative about their health condition. However, it is much easier for the modern pharmaceutics and medicine to suppress, to mask or to eliminate an irritating smell or symptom than to comprehend and eradicate its cause. The side-effects of these suppressions usually remain unlinked to their cause. They require new suppressors and eliminators and on their turn stimulate medical business. Contemporary western medicine warmly welcomes the collateral damages it inflicts and sponsors the ignorance of their origin.
As we became civilized we got alienated from the most primal sense. Olfaction[vii] supplies the most trustworthy data about the chemical composition. The olfactory receptor cells are close to the brain and report directly to its most ancient structures. The sense of smell could perfectly inform us of the state of our immune system.
Excessive body odour may be unpleasant. And what do civilized people do about this? They supress their body smells by overlying stronger artificial aromas and exterminate the normal skin flora with bactericides. Masking the body smell, however, not only misinforms one about the state of his health but worsens it due to the intoxication and damaging of the skin flora that go along with it. And the mistreated skin flora, being part of the human body ecosystem, mistreats the skin, deteriorates its health and increases its smell. Meanwhile alienation from nature alienates civilized people from their health. Luckily, however, they are oblivious of this in their clouds of synthetic nose-killing aromas.
The first thing to do to reduce the body smell is to wash with pure innocuous water. Most of us do it with intoxicated water which disturbs the normal skin flora and irritates the mucosa. Washing with normal tap water is often a sufficient condition for having a smelly prepuce due to the chronic inflammation that the additive chemicals cause. The same is also valid for using any type of improved aromatized soap. The more you wash the smelly mucous membranes and the more shampoo you use the faster they regain their unhealthy smell. And a similar thing happens with your gums and sweating parts. The more modern is the toothpaste you buy the more your periodontal disease advances. The strongest the body sprays you use are the stronger the armpit odour becomes and the faster it returns. And, of course, this is good news for the pharmaceutical industry.
It is the regular intoxication of the skin, however, that increases its smell. The regular intoxication disturbs the normal state of the skin microbiome which is equivalent to inflammation and increases body smells. Periodontal disease, for instance, is one of the most widespread diseases. But you will find a surprisingly small amount of information about its cause.[viii] This is because the pharmaceutical substances that the toothpastes contain aggravate or cause the disorder.[ix]
Most probably you are caught in a vicious circle but without being aware of this. The more you exterminate the skin microorganisms the smellier your mucous membranes become when left untreated. Can you break free? It is not so difficult if you are healthy. Stop poisoning your skin especially your mucous membranes as they not only secret but absorb substances. Wash them with distilled water that preferably has not been in contact with metal or plastic. Replace toothpaste with baking soda or with baked sea salt or with mixture of both. Use baking soda or solution you can prepare of it instead of armpit and foot sprays.
A healthy and clean human microbiome emits only moderate odours that as a rule are not repellent. Olfactory perception could be your friend and physician. The smell of the penile mucosa as well as of the other body parts can flawlessly inform you about your health. And if the smell persists find the reason why. Then you could heal the core of the problem and live with your natural odour happily. Your smell can help you really clean and heal yourself instead of intoxicate yourself or cut off body parts of yours. You just get a million-dollar advice that not only has the potential to save your prepuce, gums and general health but to increase your self-esteem.
The first thing that animals cheek in each other is their odour. Would they be happy if we make them odourless? Could a butterfly ever find its mate after having being sprayed with a deodorant? Although it is known that human pheromones have important sexual and emotional roles they are still poorly examined.[x] And this is not surprising at all in the modern chemical world. In any case we do not know what we cause to our emotional life when we eliminate these subconscious signals.
The artificial aromas used in cosmetics suppress natural odours; the aggressive bactericidal chemicals may directly decompose them or the larger molecules that normally carry them. Human pheromones circulate with the blood flow. They are released by the sweat glands and the mucous membranes including prepuce. Circumcision therefore greatly reduces masculine pheromones.
Has human evolution outgrown its chemical stage? Or simply have we lost the ability to understand the primal chemical language? Whatever the answer is the result of neglecting body odours[xi] is estrangement from nature, from the self and from each other.
